We established Christopher-Gordon in 1987 and remain an independent, privately owned company, a rarity in today’s publishing world. When we started, we were confident that we could offer a viable and meaningful alternative to the giant, merged mega-publishers with their impersonal assembly line methods. With over 15 highly successful years behind us, backed by a genuine love and respect for language and ideas, we feel more strongly than ever that we have something genuine to offer the educational community. Considering our author list and the extraordinary performance of many of our publications, such as Teaching with the Internet, Into Focus, Balanced Literacy Instruction, Developmental Continuums and Assessment, The Handbook of Literacy Assessment and Evaluation, Portfolio Assessment in the Reading/Writing Classroom, Cognitive Coaching, The Adaptive School, Literature Circles and Response, and Using Data/Getting Results, to name a few, we feel that our confidence is justified. By design we are a specialty publisher. This means we are very focused. In fact, we concentrate our publishing energies in just a few areas: literacy, educational administration, mathematics, science, and technology, and what we call general education, topics of universal interest to educators, such as classroom management and thinking skills. The materials we publish -- books, journals, CD-ROMs -- are used most frequently for professional enrichment by staff developers, curriculum coordinators, administrators and teachers. Our books are also ordered in large quantity by school districts and national organizations for in-service workshops, seminars and general distribution to their staff members. Additionally, all of our publications enjoy a strong secondary market at the college and university level; and are used by educators in over fifty foreign countries as well. Who Publishes with Christopher-Gordon Our program has been unusually successful, and has attracted some of the country's leading educators, as well as some very capable rising stars. For example, Kathryn Au, Bill Harp, Kylene Beers, Don Leu, Rob Tierney, Arthur Costa, Robert Garmston, Susan Mandel Glazer, Bonnie Hill, Violet Harris, Jeffrey Glanz, Ed Pajak, Nancy Love, Larry Tomei, and Taffy Raphael, among many others, are some of the well known writers and researchers who have published with us. On the other hand, some of our current best selling books were written by promising first time authors. All of our authors have these common characteristics: commitment to their fields, enthusiasm for their ideas, and competency in their disciplines. Our overall strategy is to publish a carefully controlled number of outstanding projects each year, usually from 15 to 20. We work carefully and thoughtfully with our authors with the intent of helping them develop a manuscript that is right for its intended market. Furthermore, since many of our publications are very topical or time sensitive in other ways, we have streamlined our production process, so that publication of a book may occur within 60 to 90 days of copyediting the manuscript. This is about one third of the time it takes most other publishers. How We Promote Our Publications At Christopher-Gordon our principal means of promotion is direct mail advertising, the most effective way of reaching in service audiences. Each year we send nearly one million advertising pieces to the memberships of such professional organizations as IRA, NCTE, ASCD, NSDC, NCTM, NSTA, and NMSA. We also have our own buyers list, which numbers nearly 60,000 educators and is growing every day. In addition to direct mail, we also advertise our books in major educational publications, such as The Reading Teacher, The Journal of Reading, Language Arts, and Educational Leadership. Finally, the effect of our direct mail and space ad campaigns is significantly enhanced by our network of independent jobbers, who call on elementary and secondary schools, public and private, across the country. These jobbers also sell our material at local and regional conferences. We ourselves attend most of the major national conferences. Our web site, www.Christopher-Gordon.com enhances our direct mail efforts by providing educators with additional material on our publications and our authors. The need for print medium will continue for as long as anyone can forecast. Most educators agree that the book, for example, is still unsurpassed as a tool for learning very involved and complex concepts; and, that is why book publishing will remain a major program at Christopher-Gordon. However, we also recognize that there are great and exciting changes afoot in the world of communications, changes that will undoubtedly have an enormous effect on education. We pride ourselves in our willingness to accept new ideas and new ways of doing things. In this spirit we have introduced new materials pertaining to technology and the classroom. This new program includes software, video, and CD-ROM. Whatever the medium, Christopher-Gordon will continue to work with educators to produce quality materials that reflect the best of the teaching profession. |
